Is Web 2.0 just another buzz word. Now we are hearing
Web 3.0. What is all the fuss about -like the fuss
on SOA a few years back. Back in 2005, Tim
O'Rielly wrote a great article explaining what Web 2.0 is
believed to be. The diagram below is from this article.

As usual, any great article spurs debates. You
can probably search the internet for tons of
people who disagree with Tim's definition and
explanation of Web 2.0. And at the rate that
the Web is changing, and we are changing our
lingo, who knows when we will start talking about
Web 4.0. Scary thought to me personally. I believe,
we as IT professionals have a limited handle
on Web 2.0 - let alone 3.0 and Web 4.0.
So a quick history lesson on the web -
Web 1.0
- Static web sites, eventually leading to dynamic
HTML web sites
- Evolution of websites driven
through databases and application server technology
(Java suites, .NET, PHP etc
- Tons of new businesses emerged, we had the
DOT COM bubble and burst
Web 2.0
- AJAX and CSS driven rich content sites
- RSS (Really Simple Syndication) - is a key
enabling technology to Web 2.0
- Social networking companies bursting everywhere;
viral sharing of content -
- Google becomes a household name; although
Yahoo in my opinion is the leading Web 2.0
enabler
- More flexible Web development
A group of
us are working on a new "social technology" that
will change the way people socialize on the internet.
We believe this social technology will become
an internet within the internet, and soon emerge
to be the "sticky" place where people want to
go. More to come on this in the next several
months.
